The Andhra Pradesh government has declared Amaravati as the new headquarters for the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board (APMB), formally shifting its base from Kakinada. This move, finalized on June 20, 2026, aligns the crucial port development agency with the state's newly cemented sole capital and reverses a previous decision made by the YSRCP government that had designated Visakhapatnam as the APMB base. This relocation is a direct consequence of the recent legislative push to establish Amaravati as the undisputed capital of Andhra Pradesh, ending years of political uncertainty. The Indian Parliament passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in April, granting statutory recognition to Amaravati and effectively scrapping the prior three-capital proposal championed by the YSRCP government. The current Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has consistently advocated for Amaravati as the sole capital and is now streamlining administrative functions to reflect this. The APMB plays a vital role in the state's ambitious port-led development strategy, overseeing an extensive coastline and plans for new greenfield ports and industrial clusters, making its location critical for coordination with top government bodies. The shift to Amaravati, following a proposal by the APMB Chief Executive Officer for 'administrative convenience,' means closer coordination with the state secretariat and other departments. This administrative consolidation is expected to accelerate decision-making for ongoing and planned maritime projects, including the development of several new greenfield ports and associated industrial cities along the state's nearly 1,000 km coastline. As the state pushes its 'port-led development' agenda, observers will be watching how this centralized approach impacts the pace and efficiency of these large-scale infrastructure investments.
