The World Health Organization (WHO) is sounding a fresh alarm as viral hepatitis continues to claim a life every 30 seconds, underscoring critical shortfalls in global elimination efforts. This urgent warning comes as its specialized agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), formally reclassified Hepatitis D (HDV) as 'carcinogenic to humans' in July 2025, putting it on par with Hepatitis B and C in its cancer-causing potential. The reclassification highlights HDV severe risk, as it dramatically increases the chance of liver cancer in individuals already infected with Hepatitis B. Globally, an estimated 12 million people battle HDV, often unknowingly, as it only strikes those already carrying Hepatitis B. This co-infection is particularly dangerous, accelerating progression to liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer. While the world set an ambitious goal in 2016 to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030—aiming for a 90% reduction in new infections and 65% fewer deaths—the WHO latest 2026 Global Hepatitis Report reveals that progress is significantly off track, with mortality rates still climbing rather than falling. Amid these challenges, significant medical advancements offer a glimmer of hope. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Gilead's Hepcludex (bulevirtide) on May 22, 2026, marking the first ever treatment for chronic HDV in the United States, following earlier approvals in Europe and the UK. Separately, China conditionally approved Libevitug in January 2026, a groundbreaking monoclonal antibody treatment for HDV. These new therapies, coupled with the annual World Hepatitis Day campaign (July 28) urging action to 'Break It Down,' aim to dismantle barriers like stigma and lack of awareness, pushing for improved screening and access to life-saving treatments to prevent millions of future deaths.
