Himachal Boosts AI, Research: HPU Gets Rs 5 Crore for B.Tech in AI

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has just announced a significant Rs 5 crore grant for Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) to launch a brand new B.Tech course in Artificial Intelligence (AI). This major push for future-ready education came during HPU 57th Foundation Day celebrations on July 22, 2026, aiming to equip students with skills in cutting-edge technologies. This initiative isn't just about a new course; it's part of a broader vision for Himachal Pradesh to become a leader in emerging technologies, including quantum computing and data storage. CM Sukhu, an alumnus of HPU himself, emphasized the need for universities to adapt to these changes and even laid foundation stones for a modern Digital Library and an administrative block for the University Institute of Legal Studies, totaling over Rs 16 crore in new infrastructure. This aligns with India's national focus on integrating AI into education, as seen with Karnataka's plans for an AI University and the 'Padhai with AI' program already launched in Bilaspur district earlier this year. Looking ahead, HPU is also set to become the state's nodal agency for green hydrogen research, signaling a commitment to sustainable technology alongside AI. With the state government funding overseas exposure visits for students and faculty, and a focus on employment-oriented courses, the university aims to prepare its graduates for global opportunities.
