A massive glacier collapse in Nepal on August 26, 2026, unleashed a powerful flood of water, rocks, and mud through river valleys, killing over 1,000 people and leaving thousands more missing across Nepal and Tibet. Concerns are also growing about slow global climate finance, with a Green Climate Fund project for GLOF risk reduction in Nepal delayed by seven years before approval in 2025. Looking ahead, there is an urgent need for better Early Warning Systems (EWS) and stronger cross-border cooperation to share data on glaciers and river levels. Governments and international groups are pushing for 'climate-conscious development' to avoid building in dangerous areas and to protect river channels. Projects like the Namche Action Plan 2026-2030 and new apps like Apada Sahayak are working to build community readiness and help people respond to natural disasters, but the continuous melting means communities are racing against time.
