The Himalayas, a dream for climbers, are fast becoming a death trap. Just last week, a massive avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram Range tragically killed 10 climbers, including Nepal's famed mountaineer Nirmal 'Nimsdai' Purja. This July tragedy, a time typically outside the highest avalanche risk period, has experts pointing to one clear culprit: rapidly accelerating climate change. The mountains are warming almost twice as fast as the global average, leading to dangerous glacier melt, thawing permafrost that loosens rocks, and unstable snowpacks prone to sudden collapse. The 2025 autumn climbing season already saw a deadly avalanche on Yalung Ri in Nepal, claiming seven lives, with unstable snow and fluctuating weather blamed. These changes are not just affecting climbers; they're causing more frequent glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and landslides, threatening millions living downstream and highlighting a severe water security crisis for nearly two billion people across Asia. In response to these growing dangers, Nepal's Department of Tourism has tightened mountaineering rules for the Spring 2026 season, making permits stricter and requiring GPS trackers and prior high-altitude experience for Everest expeditions. India, too, is actively monitoring over 2,400 Himalayan glacial lakes, identifying 56 as 'very high risk' for GLOFs as of 2025. As the mountains become more unpredictable, climbers, governments, and local communities face an urgent challenge to adapt to a landscape drastically reshaped by global warming.
