Hong Kong has achieved a major healthcare milestone with the establishment of its first PIC/S GMP-certified Stem Cell Production Facility at Hong Kong Science Park. Hong Kong Regen Medtech Limited (HKRM) secured this international 'gold standard' certification in May 2026 for producing allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), which means the facility can now make advanced cell therapy products for human clinical trials locally, directly benefiting patients and boosting trust in locally manufactured treatments. This significant development was highlighted at the HKSTP Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT) Showcase 2026, an event bringing together over 200 experts, investors, and patient representatives to explore advancements in cell and gene therapies. Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) is leading the push to position Hong Kong as a leading hub for life and health technology, with more than 360 life science companies now based at the Science Park. The showcase also featured real-life patient stories and progress from 10 park companies, demonstrating the direct impact of these innovations. The new facility is expected to accelerate the journey of advanced cell therapies from research labs to actual patient care, helping treat serious conditions like alpha-thalassemia and neonatal brain injury, which researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) are actively studying. This move strengthens Hong Kong's standing in the global biotech sector, promising safer and more accessible treatment options for its citizens and positioning the city as a critical player in the future of regenerative medicine in Asia.
