House Panel Flags Hurdles in India's AI Drive, Quizzes MeitY on GPU Progress

India's ambitious drive to build a robust AI infrastructure and sovereign AI model is hitting some speed bumps. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, in its latest report on August 6, has grilled the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for an update on its consultations with cloud providers and startups for vital Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). The panel also offered to help craft a scalable infrastructure plan, highlighting concerns about development delays and the IndiaAI Mission underutilized budget. This latest scrutiny comes as India aggressively pursues a target of 200,000 GPUs under its IndiaAI Mission to power indigenous Artificial Intelligence development and reduce reliance on foreign tech. While MeitY announced the addition of 24,000 GPUs in March 2026, bringing the total to 62,000, and Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier projected over $200 billion in AI investments, the parliamentary panel isn't convinced everything is on track. They've pointed to significant roadblocks like the high cost of hardware, global supply chain disruptions, massive power and water consumption by data centers, and even questioned the tax holiday given to foreign cloud firms, urging MeitY to consult a wider range of experts. Looking ahead, the committee's persistent questioning emphasizes a critical need for transparent execution and faster progress for the IndiaAI Mission, which has already seen its budget for FY27 halved and missed key fellowship targets. With a February 2026 target for India's first sovereign AI model looming and domestic players like Sarvam AI pushing for trillion-parameter models, MeitY faces pressure to bridge the gap between ambitious targets and ground-level realities. The coming months will show whether the government can effectively bring together cloud providers, startups, and experts to build the scalable, sustainable GPU infrastructure essential for India's AI dreams.
