Hyderabad Boosts Green Ganesh: Over 2.3 Lakh Clay Idols Distributed to Protect Lakes

Hyderabad is going all in on green celebrations this Ganesh Chaturthi, with civic bodies distributing over 2.3 lakh free clay Ganesh idols to steer devotees away from environmentally harmful Plaster of Paris (PoP) versions. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) alone is providing one lakh idols, while the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is adding another 1.33 lakh to the city's festive preparations between September 9 and 13, 2026. This massive push comes as local authorities, including the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) and Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC), intensify their long-standing drive to keep PoP idols out of city lakes and rivers. PoP idols contain chemicals and heavy metals that pollute water bodies like Hussain Sagar, harming aquatic life and overall environmental health upon immersion. The Telangana High Court has repeatedly upheld bans on PoP idol immersion in natural water bodies, pushing for alternatives like specially constructed 'baby ponds' for their disposal. As the 11-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival, beginning around September 14, 2026, approaches, the success of this 'Eco Ganesha, Green Ganesha, Clay Ganesha' campaign will hinge on public participation. Beyond idol distribution, GHMC is also setting up separate bins at immersion sites for puja materials, encouraging responsible waste management. The goal is to make eco-friendly celebrations a new standard, safeguarding Hyderabad's natural resources for years to come.
