Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have successfully nabbed two individuals in connection with a sophisticated 'digital arrest' cyber fraud that swindled a retired man and his daughter of a staggering Rs 29.17 lakh. The culprits employed a complex scheme, impersonating high-ranking officials from national investigative agencies to instill fear and coerce victims into transferring their life savings, which were then laundered through a web of mule bank accounts and converted into Tether (USDT) cryptocurrency. This arrest highlights the growing threat of advanced cyber scams targeting unsuspecting citizens. The modus operandi involved fraudsters posing as officers from agencies like the Delhi Police, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and Enforcement Directorate (ED), falsely accusing the victims of money laundering and threatening immediate arrest. This tactic, known as 'digital arrest,' aims to isolate and intimidate individuals, forcing them to comply with fraudulent 'financial verification' demands. The use of mule bank accounts and cryptocurrency like Tether (USDT) is a common strategy by cybercriminals to obscure their money trail, making it harder for law enforcement to trace the illicit funds, a trend observed in multiple recent Indian cybercrime cases. While two suspects, Mohd Ashfaq Hussain and Ahmed Najeeb Uddin, have been arrested, a third key associate, Sachin from Bengaluru, remains at large, indicating a broader network behind the scam. Authorities are now investigating links to at least 16 other similar cases across India, emphasizing the need for increased public awareness and robust cybersecurity measures. Individuals are urged to report any suspicious activities through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) to help combat this evolving menace.
