The Indian Air Force (IAF) has drawn a clear battle map for India's drone future, directly engaging nearly 100 drone manufacturers, MSMEs, and Start-Ups at an industry outreach event in New Delhi on October 21. This crucial interaction saw the IAF detail its Unmanned and Autonomous Systems Roadmap, signalling a critical shift towards indigenous development of advanced drone capabilities. The goal is to build a robust domestic ecosystem for future unmanned warfare, moving away from reliance on foreign technology. This outreach follows the roadmap's initial unveiling during IAF Dronathon 2026 at Pokhran in September, emphasizing a 'layered and networked family' of unmanned systems designed to complement manned aircraft. The IAF stressed 'Aatmanirbharta' or self-reliance as an operational necessity, highlighting critical areas like indigenous propulsion, autonomous software, resilient navigation, and standardised interfaces for urgent development. This push aligns with India's broader defense modernization, where an expanding ecosystem of over 600 drone companies and significant government support schemes like iDEX are driving innovation. Looking ahead, this strategic guidance is expected to channel industry efforts towards specific military needs, fostering greater AI integration, autonomous mission planning, and Manned-Unmanned Teaming. While India's drone sector has seen substantial private investment in defense startups, the challenge remains in transforming this potential into comprehensive domestic manufacturing, reducing dependence on imported components and moving beyond a 'lowest bidder' procurement culture. The IAF clear directive aims to accelerate India's ambition of becoming a global drone manufacturing hub in the coming years.
