The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has greenlit a significant Rs 104-crore cybersecurity project, placing the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in charge of its implementation and management for the next three years. This crucial move aims to fortify the state's digital infrastructure against a rapidly evolving landscape of cyber threats, with IIT Kanpur overseeing continuous monitoring, incident response, maintenance, and technical support. This development comes amidst a growing wave of cyber threats targeting India, including sophisticated ransomware, AI-powered phishing scams, and even rogue AI agents breaching government systems, as highlighted by recent reports. Uttar Pradesh has been proactively bolstering its digital defenses, expanding cyber police stations to all 75 districts, and upgrading its 1930 Cyber Helpline to make reporting financial cybercrime easier. The state has also announced plans for an AI City and a park for technological research in cybersecurity, showcasing a broader commitment to digital resilience. As IIT Kanpur steps into this pivotal role, the focus will be on rolling out the comprehensive cybersecurity measures, which Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna underscored as vital for identifying, monitoring, and responding to cyber threats effectively. The success of this three-year engagement will not only secure UP's extensive digital assets but also potentially set a benchmark for other Indian states grappling with similar challenges, pushing for robust, proactive cyber defense strategies in an increasingly digital world. The project, including operational and maintenance costs, demonstrates a serious commitment to safeguarding public digital services.
