In Gujarat, ‘Lakhpati Didi’ scheme empowers lakhs of women

Gujarat is making significant strides in women's economic empowerment, announcing that nearly six lakh women in the state have become 'Lakhpati Didis' under the central government's ambitious scheme. This milestone, revealed in late June 2026, highlights Gujarat as a frontrunner in achieving financial independence for rural women, enabling them to earn a sustainable annual household income of at least ₹1 lakh. The 'Lakhpati Didi' initiative, which functions under the broader Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), provides crucial skill training, financial assistance, and market access, transforming lives across the state. At its core, the scheme leverages the power of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) by equipping their members with diverse livelihood options, ranging from traditional crafts to modern enterprises like drone operation. Launched in August 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the program initially aimed to create two crore 'Lakhpati Didis' nationwide, a target expanded to three crore in February 2024, and now an ambitious six crore by March 2029. This focus on sustained income, verified over multiple agricultural or business cycles, ensures long-term financial stability and reduces dependence on informal lenders. Looking ahead, the initiative is set for further expansion, integrating advanced technologies and strengthening institutional support to reach its enhanced national goal. This includes deploying 'Namo Drone Didis' for agricultural services and utilizing AI for efficient SHG operations. The success in states like Gujarat is expected to inspire similar growth across the country, as the Ministry of Rural Development continues to foster collaboration with various government departments and private sector players to deepen the scheme's impact and create more women entrepreneurs.
