India is set to dramatically expand its 5G network coverage starting next month, as the government has doubled the Electromagnetic Field (EMF) limits for mobile networks to align with international safety standards. This critical policy shift will allow telecom operators to cover larger geographical areas using fewer towers, directly addressing the challenge of providing quality service amid a surge in 5G traffic. The new rules, effective from September 2026, increase the permitted power density for a 5G base tower station (BTS) to 10 watts per square metre, up from the previous 5 watts. While health concerns related to radiofrequency radiation have historically been a point of public debate, authorities and global scientific bodies like ICNIRP maintain that exposure levels below these updated limits show no substantiated adverse health effects.
