India Eyed for Future Ashes Test as Cricket Australia Explores Global Expansion

Cricket Australia (CA) boss Todd Greenberg has ignited conversations by confirming his openness to India potentially hosting a historic commemorative Test match between Australia and England, a lucrative prospect for global cricket. While the eagerly anticipated 150th-anniversary clash of the iconic Ashes rivalry is currently set for a day-night encounter at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in March 2027, Greenberg's remarks hint at a future where such marquee games could move beyond traditional venues to leverage India's immense market power. The allure of India is primarily commercial; the subcontinent remains cricket's largest audience and a massive financial draw, prompting Cricket Australia to actively expand its presence there. Just this December, the Big Bash League (BBL) will stage a match in Chennai, a clear step towards tapping into the Indian fanbase. Even the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently projected substantial profits from white-ball matches hosted against India, surpassing expected earnings from their own Ashes series. Such a move for a special Ashes Test, traditionally played only in England or Australia since 1882, would mark a dramatic shift, driven by the chance to generate huge interest and new commercial opportunities. However, staging a five-day Test in India isn't straightforward due to an already jam-packed international schedule, including the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) and India's home five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, which runs from late January into early March 2027. Any such fixture would require strong backing from both the England and Wales Cricket Board and the powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While no concrete plans exist yet, Greenberg's openness sets the stage for intriguing discussions that could reshape how cricket's biggest rivalries are celebrated globally.
