The Indian Army has launched a critical new facility, AASHVAST, in New Delhi to specifically detect hidden Chinese-made components, software flaws, and security risks in its military drones. This state-of-the-art laboratory, formally known as the 'Assessment and Analysis of Electronic Systems Hardware for Vulnerabilities and Security Threats', goes beyond basic inspections to thoroughly examine both hardware and firmware, aiming to secure India's growing drone fleet from potential espionage. The move comes amid longstanding concerns over the integrity of supply chains for military hardware and rising geopolitical tensions, particularly with China. India has been actively pushing its 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative to achieve self-reliance in defense, with a comprehensive drone security framework introduced in July 2026 to phase out foreign components and strengthen cybersecurity. The AASHVAST lab, inaugurated by Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth on August 14, 2026, is crucial for validating critical defense platforms and enhancing cyber resilience, especially as military drones become indispensable for surveillance, precision strikes, and electronic warfare. With the facility operating in an air-gapped, read-only environment, it will rigorously check for hidden passwords, remote-access tools, and assess a drone's resilience against GPS spoofing and jamming without altering the device. This initiative is set to significantly impact India's defence procurement strategy, with the findings from AASHVAST influencing the upcoming Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2026. The focus remains on building an indigenous drone ecosystem, ensuring that India's military remains secure and operationally ready against evolving cyber threats and supply chain vulnerabilities.
