India just locked in firm timelines for its next-generation fighter jets, with the TEJAS MK-2 prototype set for its first flight by September 2027 and the stealthy, fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) targeting September 2028. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh made the announcement at the NDTV Defence Summit in Delhi, signaling a major leap in India's indigenous air power ambitions. This crucial update arrives as India pushes for greater self-reliance in defense, especially against a rapidly modernizing regional threat landscape. Interestingly, state-owned giant Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been excluded from the AMCA prototype development phase due to not meeting routine technical criteria, opening the door for private sector players like Tata Advanced Systems and two other consortia to bid for this critical project. This shift aims to diversify India's defense industrial base and accelerate development, a move underscored by the government fully funding the AMCA prototype phase with approximately ₹15,000 crore. Looking ahead, the successful rollout and flight testing of these indigenous aircraft will be keenly watched, as India also weighs interim solutions like the Russian Su-57 to bridge its current fifth-generation fighter gap. The focus remains on building a robust, independent aerospace ecosystem, with plans even extending to sixth-generation fighter development. The coming years will reveal if India can transform these confirmed timelines into tangible aerial dominance.
