India's equity markets are on track to deliver robust annual returns of approximately 15% over the next five years, potentially doubling investor portfolios, according to veteran investor Raamdeo Agrawal, Co-founder of Motilal Oswal Financial Services. This optimistic outlook comes as the first-quarter FY27 earnings season shows promising results, particularly from banks, NBFCs, automobiles, and capital goods companies, signaling a broader recovery across the Indian economic landscape. Underpinning this bullish sentiment is a convergence of factors: domestic liquidity remains strong, corporate earnings are improving, and Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) are starting to reverse their selling trend, injecting around $2.5 billion into Indian equities since mid-June 2026. Ajay Khandelwal, Head of Equities at Motilal Oswal Asset Management, highlights financials, capital goods, and manufacturing as core sectors to watch, projecting a sustained growth runway for these areas due to government and private capital expenditure and infrastructure spending. The Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) sector, in particular, is shedding past stresses, with Motilal Oswal Financial Services anticipating cleaner balance sheets, improved funding availability, and strong loan growth for FY27. Looking ahead, while the IT sector faces headwinds from GenAI disruption and geopolitical risks, strategic investments in infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and application modernization are expected to drive significant growth in IT services spending in India, projected at over 11% in 2026. Investors are advised to focus on a 'bottom-up' stock-picking approach, identifying quality companies with strong fundamentals, rather than simply chasing market momentum, as Indian markets are approaching an inflection point that rewards careful selection amid fair, though not cheap, valuations. The confluence of strong domestic consumption, government initiatives, and a resilient financial sector positions India for a sustained period of wealth creation.
