Indian Railways is gearing up to launch its game-changing door-to-door parcel delivery service, 'Rail Parcel App – Ghar se Ghar Tak,' across eight major cities. This move, following a successful pilot, will allow customers in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune to easily book parcel pickups and deliveries from their homes, marking a significant leap in convenience and modernising India's logistics landscape. The service aims to cut down on the hassle of physically visiting railway stations for sending or receiving parcels. This new initiative is a major step in Indian Railways' strategy to expand its logistics services and increase its share in the country's competitive freight market. The system will rely on logistics partners for the 'first-mile pickup' and 'last-mile delivery,' while the railways will handle the efficient 'middle-mile' transport between stations. This hybrid model leverages the extensive rail network for speed and cost-effectiveness, integrating it with local delivery expertise, and comes shortly after the Railway Board introduced discounted round-trip bookings for parcel coaches to boost festive season cargo. Customers can book and pay online through the dedicated mobile app, with a booking window opening 15 days before a train's departure and closing one day prior. Logistics partners will need to hand over consignments to railway staff up to an hour before departure, ensuring tight scheduling. The success of this integrated approach will be closely watched as Indian Railways aims to become a dominant player in India's rapidly growing logistics sector, potentially setting a new standard for parcel delivery and challenging road transport's long-held dominance.
