Apollo Cancer Centres (ACC) has just launched a groundbreaking blood test in India, the Shield Multi-Cancer Detection (MCD) test, marking a major leap in the country's fight against cancer. This innovative screening tool, brought in partnership with Zydus Lifesciences and developed by US-based Guardant Health, aims to find signals of 10 common cancers from a single blood sample. It's a game-changer for early cancer detection, a critical need in India where many cases are found too late. India is grappling with a rising cancer burden, and a significant majority of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages, which makes treatment tougher and survival rates lower despite medical advancements. The Shield MCD test uses a special technology called a methylation-based blood test, which can spot tiny chemical changes in DNA fragments shed by cancer cells into the bloodstream. Designed for people aged 45 and above who are at average risk, this test has even received a 'Breakthrough Device Designation' from the US FDA for its strong performance in detecting various cancers, highlighting its potential to transform how we approach cancer screening. This introduction doesn't replace traditional screening but works alongside it, offering a less invasive way to identify potential cancer signals much earlier. Experts hope that making such advanced Multi-cancer early detection (MCED) technology accessible will encourage more people to get screened, leading to faster diagnoses and better treatment outcomes across India. The move signals a proactive shift towards a more preventative healthcare model, with the potential to significantly impact public health and improve patient lives.
