India's Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran issued a sharp warning today, emphasizing that the financial sector rapid embrace of Artificial Intelligence (AI) must be matched by a proactive approach to safety and security. Speaking at the ASSOCHAM FinTech Festival, Nageswaran stressed that AI must never become a tool for 'Financial Exclusion' and insisted on keeping 'humans in the loop' to maintain control over automated decisions. This urgent call comes as AI continues to revolutionize how banks and fintech firms operate, offering immense opportunities but also amplifying significant risks. While AI and Machine Learning (ML) are game-changers for improving Credit Assessment, enhancing Risk Detection, and streamlining operations, their unchecked adoption poses serious threats. Concerns are mounting over Algorithmic Bias, where AI models might unintentionally perpetuate discrimination based on historical data, leading to unfair outcomes in lending or services. Furthermore, the 'black box' nature of many AI systems creates a lack of Explainable AI (XAI), making it difficult to understand how decisions are made, which clashes with regulatory demands for transparency. The increasing reliance on vast datasets for AI also heightens Data Privacy and Cybersecurity risks, from breaches to sophisticated cyberattacks leveraging AI itself. Moving forward, regulators and financial institutions must collaborate to build robust governance frameworks that prioritize ethical AI design, continuous monitoring, and strong human oversight. India, with its advanced Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), is uniquely positioned to lead in AI-driven financial services, but this leadership hinges on balancing innovation with responsibility. The push is now on for proactive measures, including diverse training data and bias mitigation techniques, to ensure AI serves all segments of society fairly and securely, rather than creating new barriers.
