Former Cabinet Secretary and current NITI Aayog member Rajiv Gauba recently delivered a sharp call to action, emphasizing India's urgent need for extensive energy diversification and boosting domestic capacity to power its ambitious 'Viksit Bharat@2047' vision. Speaking at the PNGRB 20th Foundation Day on October 1, 2026, Gauba underscored that a resilient energy system is non-negotiable amidst escalating global geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions. India, heavily reliant on energy imports, faces a complex challenge: meeting rapidly growing demand driven by urbanization and industrialization while navigating volatile global markets. The push for domestic oil and gas Exploration and Production, particularly in Frontier and Deep-water Areas, is gaining traction, with the government planning to open up vast unexplored regions. Simultaneously, there's a significant drive to expand the natural gas economy through the National Gas Grid, improved LNG Terminals, and the aggressive National PNG Drive 3.0, which aims for 50 lakh new Piped Natural Gas connections by March 2027. Looking ahead, expect accelerated regulatory reforms to cut red tape and foster investment across the energy value chain, including in cutting-edge areas like Green Hydrogen, syngas, and carbon dioxide pipelines. The PNGRB recent Action Plan for FY 2026-27 already signals a move towards initiatives like 'One Nation, One Tariff' and integrating Compressed Biogas into existing infrastructure. The success of these initiatives will be crucial for India to secure its energy future and realize its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
