In a landmark move at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, India's financial regulators, Sebi and the Reserve Bank of India, have jointly launched 'Demat 2.0,' a pilot project for the tokenization of corporate bonds, promising instantaneous 'atomic settlement' via blockchain and the wholesale Central Bank Digital Currency. Simultaneously, NPCI unveiled crucial new UPI capabilities, including 'Tap & Pay' for seamless contactless payments and 'MyUPI,' an AI-powered customer support solution, further cementing India's lead in digital finance. Sebi Demat 2.0 reimagines the bond market's underlying plumbing, using Distributed Ledger Technology to digitally represent corporate bonds and enabling real-time fund transfers with CBDC, with state-owned REC, L&T, and IIFL already issuing tokenized bonds worth ₹1,025 crore under the pilot. This initiative aims to drastically cut settlement times and operational costs, moving beyond traditional multi-step processes. Meanwhile, NPCI 'Tap & Pay' leverages NFC for quick, PIN-less transactions up to ₹5,000 at Point-of-Sale terminals, building on previous biometric authentication features to enhance user convenience and security. The new MyUPI platform, powered by NPCI own FiMI AI model, offers a unified view of transactions and introduces features like a 'Safety Switch' for suspected fraud, showcasing a proactive approach to user trust and control. Looking ahead, Demat 2.0 is set to roll out in phases, with plans to expand secondary market trading to retail investors and eventually encompass other asset classes like equities and gold, signalling a broader digital transformation of India's capital markets. For UPI, NPCI is actively developing a framework for 'AI Agents for UPI Payments,' which could allow AI to manage low-value, frequent transactions on behalf of users, while also exploring instant RuPay card issuance at ATMs. These advancements underscore India's commitment to building a robust, efficient, and inclusive digital financial infrastructure for the future.
