India's first hydrogen-powered train is gearing up to hit an operational speed of 110 kilometres per hour (kmph) soon, following successful high-speed trials at 120 kmph. This significant upgrade was confirmed by Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar, marking a major leap for the nation's efforts in green mobility since Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the train on July 17, 2026, on the Jind-Sonipat route. This move places India among a select group of countries embracing advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology for railways, aiming to replace older diesel trains on non-electrified routes and drastically reduce carbon emissions. The 'Hydrogen for Heritage' initiative, under which this train was developed, showcases India's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and strengthens the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision by using indigenous technology. The train produces only water vapor and heat, unlike polluting diesel engines. As consultations are underway to finalize new routes, technical arrangements, and critical hydrogen fuel supply systems, railway officials expect broader deployment to follow this pilot project's success. This pioneering step sets the stage for a quieter, cleaner future for Indian rail travel, with plans for more hydrogen train to be introduced across the country.
