India's general insurance sector is grappling with a significant surge in customer grievances, with complaints on the IRDAI Bima Bharosa portal spiking by a worrying 41% in the last fiscal year, reaching 1.37 lakh for general and health insurance alone. This sharp rise, where claim rejections, delays, partial payments, and documentation disputes account for nearly 70% of issues, is prompting urgent regulatory action to protect policyholders and restore trust in the market. The growing discontent highlights persistent issues within the industry, from often confusing policy clauses and insufficient disclosure by insurers to alleged mis-selling practices by agents who prioritize sales over suitable products. Medical inflation is also pushing up claims costs, further straining the system, even as overall insurance penetration in India lags behind global averages. In response, IRDAI has tightened disclosure norms, mandated clearer explanations for claim rejections, and linked the variable pay of top insurer management to grievance handling, signaling a tougher stance on accountability. Looking ahead, the regulator is set to unveil a major overhaul of insurance distribution commissions by the end of July, aiming to curb mis-selling by shifting to staggered payouts over the policy's life. Coupled with reforms like a reduced waiting period for pre-existing diseases and an extended free-look period, these moves aim to build a more transparent and consumer-friendly insurance landscape. Policyholders should keep a close eye on these developments, as the Supreme Court has also recently stepped in, urging IRDAI to address ambiguous policy language in motor insurance.
