India is aggressively stepping onto the global sporting stage, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirming the nation's ambitious bids to host the 2036 Olympic Games and the already secured 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya recently highlighted PM Modi's proactive vision for international sports collaborations, especially with Australia and New Zealand, emphasizing a strategic roadmap to enhance India's sports ecosystem and nurture young talent. This bold move underscores India's commitment to becoming a major player in the world of sports, moving beyond just participation to hosting marquee global events. This push comes as India actively positions itself as a competent host, having already staged 36 international sporting events between January 2025 and June 2026, with 11 more planned for the next six months and 19 secured through 2028. The nation's bid for the 2036 Olympics is currently in the 'Continuous Dialogue' stage with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), with Ahmedabad proposed as the host city, competing against other contenders like Qatar, Turkey, and South Africa. Meanwhile, Ahmedabad was formally ratified to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030 on November 26, 2025, with India planning to reintroduce key sports and even indigenous disciplines like yogasana and kho kho. Looking ahead, the focus is on robust infrastructure development under initiatives like the Khelo India Scheme, including a ₹120 crore investment in new facilities, and a strong drive to combat doping within the sporting ecosystem. With the 2036 Olympic host set to be unveiled by mid-2029, India's sustained efforts in athlete development, hosting major events, and forging global partnerships will be crucial in solidifying its position and realizing PM Modi's vision of ranking among the top five sporting nations by 2047. The country will officially receive the Commonwealth Games baton during the Glasgow 2026 closing ceremony, marking the formal handover to Ahmedabad.
