India's Green Grid Dreams Face Reality Check: Can Wires Keep Up With Watts?

India's ambitious drive to build out its power transmission network is hitting a tough patch, with grid congestion forcing renewable energy projects to slash generation by as much as 50%. A recent ICRA report highlighted that transmission bottlenecks are severely impacting solar projects, particularly across the western and northern regions, where over 300 Gigawatt-hours of green power were curtailed in the first quarter of 2026 alone. This unexpected brake on green power, despite massive investment plans of over ₹9.15 lakh crore by 2032, threatens the country's clean energy targets and is making developers rethink their strategies. The core issue is a stark mismatch: renewable energy capacity is expanding much faster than the infrastructure needed to carry that power. Land acquisition hurdles, slow regulatory approvals, and fierce competition from Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) are causing significant delays, with only about 12% of projects commissioned on time by March 2026. Moreover, many projects are relying on short-term grid access through Temporary General Network Access (T-GNA), which, while a temporary fix, is proving costly for developers due to frequent curtailments. The slowdown in new renewable energy project awards, coupled with 40-45 GW of awarded capacity lacking signed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), further underscores the systemic challenges. Looking ahead, the government's National Electricity Plan (NEP) aims to boost the transmission network to 6.48 lakh Circuit Kilometers and 2,345 Gigavolt-Amperes by 2032, incorporating advanced technologies and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Recent project awards to POWERGRID, Bajel Projects, and AnantGrid Projects One Private Limited for evacuating large-scale renewable power offer a glimmer of hope. However, for India to truly electrify its green future, swift action is needed to streamline land clearances, accelerate infrastructure build-out, and ensure robust, long-term Power Purchase Agreements that protect developer returns from current grid woes.
