India's Healthcare Future: AIIMS Awantipora and Rewari Nearing December 2026 Completion

India's push for advanced medical facilities is hitting key milestones, with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Awantipora, Jammu & Kashmir, and Rewari, Haryana, both on track for completion by December 2026. The Lok Sabha was informed on Friday, July 31, 2026, that AIIMS Awantipora has achieved 78% physical progress, while AIIMS Rewari stands at 64.85% completion. This update signals a significant step forward in bringing world-class healthcare closer to millions across these regions. These projects are part of the broader Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), a central government plan to fix imbalances in specialized healthcare and boost medical education nationwide. Building new AIIMS institutions in underserved areas like Awantipora and Rewari aims to reduce the need for patients to travel far for advanced treatment and to create more opportunities for aspiring doctors. While AIIMS Awantipora has been a 'beacon of hope' for Kashmir, AIIMS Rewari is set to serve south Haryana and parts of Rajasthan, addressing long-standing needs for better medical services and academic facilities. Looking ahead, with physical construction nearing its end, the focus will soon shift to making these institutions fully operational. AIIMS Rewari expects to start its Outpatient Department (OPD) services by March 2026 and medical classes by June/July 2026, with 50 MBBS seats already approved. Similarly, AIIMS Awantipora planned for its OPD to start in March-April 2026, with Inpatient Department (IPD) and academic activities commencing by November-December 2026, making it fully functional by year-end. The completion will not only improve patient care and medical research but also generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, fostering local economic growth.
