In a historic move, India's government has approved the sale of a controlling 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank to 10955230 Canada Inc., a part of Canadian giant Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd., for a whopping ₹52,878 crore. This landmark deal, cleared by the Union Cabinet on October 14, 2026, marks the country's largest-ever foreign direct investment (FDI) in the financial sector and a major step in the government's plan to sell off state-owned businesses. This sale is a huge win for the government's long-running strategic disinvestment efforts, especially after similar efforts for IDBI Bank faced hurdles earlier this year with bids falling short of expectations. The approval means Fairfax will pay ₹81 per share, which is more than the ₹75.99 fair value set by independent experts, showing confidence in IDBI Bank turnaround. The bank, once facing troubles, had successfully come out of the RBI strict Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework in March 2021 after improving its financial health a lot, with bad loans greatly reduced. Now, attention shifts to the next steps: getting final clearances from regulators like the Reserve Bank of India and the Competition Commission of India. Fairfax will also need to deal with RBI rules about owning multiple banks, as it already has a big stake in CSB Bank, potentially requiring a merger or sale of one within two years. This deal is expected to encourage more foreign investment in India's booming financial market and reshape the country's banking landscape, showing how serious the government is about bringing private players into the financial sector.
