India's Mega Exams Go Digital: Nilekani Task Force Pushes NEET to Computer-Based Future

India's highly competitive entrance examinations are on the cusp of a major digital overhaul, with the National Testing Agency (NTA) confirming that the critical NEET-UG medical entrance exam will transition to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode from 2027. This move, driven by a high-powered task force led by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, aims to inject much-needed transparency and security following the tumultuous NEET-UG 2026 paper leak scandal. NTA Director General Abhishek Singh recently stated that CBT is 'the future' as the agency works to fortify the integrity of its assessments. The urgency for reform intensified after the NEET-UG 2026 examination was cancelled due to alleged irregularities, leading to widespread student protests and even the resignation of the Union Education Minister. While major exams like JEE Main and CUET already utilize CBT, NEET-UG has remained the sole large-scale national test using traditional pen-and-paper OMR sheet. The Nilekani task force is not just pushing for digital infrastructure but also addressing concerns raised by student groups like Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who have suggested comprehensive reforms including stronger security, uniform exam center standards, and even conducting NEET twice a year. The NTA itself is implementing broader internal changes, such as a four-tier paper scrutiny system, removal of 600 experts, and deploying CISF security to its offices, alongside exploring Artificial Intelligence for fraud detection. With the Supreme Court also keen on the task force's recommendations for online NEET, the shift promises a significant shake-up for millions of aspiring students. The NTA focus now shifts to augmenting testing infrastructure and building robust safeguards to handle approximately 20 lakh candidates seamlessly in a digital environment. While the 2027 implementation for NEET-UG CBT is confirmed, students and stakeholders will be closely watching for official notifications on operational specifics like the number of shifts, test center arrangements, and the exact methods for normalisation and tie-breaking, which are crucial for ensuring a fair transition.
