India's Oil Giants Unleash ₹2,000 Crore Fund for Energy Deeptech Startups

In a massive push for homegrown innovation, India's leading oil and gas Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have officially launched the MC2+Ignite accelerator in partnership with IIT Madras. This new platform, under the umbrella of the MC² Foundation, is pouring an initial ₹70-80 crore into a first cohort of around 30 deeptech startups, with plans for a much larger ₹2,000 crore growth-stage fund in the pipeline. This move aims to supercharge solutions in critical areas like AI-led subsurface intelligence, advanced drilling, hydrogen, and bioenergy, directly linking early-stage innovators with the operational needs and infrastructure of major energy players. This initiative comes at a crucial time as India seeks to enhance its energy security and accelerate its transition towards cleaner fuels, while also improving efficiency in traditional oil and gas operations. The backing by giants like ONGC, Indian Oil, BPCL, HPCL, GAIL, and Oil India offers these startups invaluable access to testing environments, mentorship, and potential procurement opportunities that are often out of reach for nascent deeptech ventures. Recent reports highlight that India's deeptech sector saw record funding in 2025, reaching nearly $3 billion, with AI and green energy technologies attracting significant capital, making this collaboration a strategic lever for national growth. The MC2+Ignite accelerator is currently accepting applications until August 31, 2026, specifically targeting startups at the prototype-to-early-pilot stage. Beyond initial funding, selected companies could receive up to ₹50 lakh in convertible funding and potentially an additional ₹1.5 crore, providing a robust pathway from lab to commercial deployment. This focused investment is expected to foster a new generation of energy solutions, positioning India as a leader in deeptech innovation for a sustainable energy future.
