India's Seas Get Smarter: ISRO Tech to Secure 1 Lakh Fishing Vessels

In a game-changing move for India's maritime safety, the Union Department of Fisheries has just approved a massive Rs 364 crore project to fit one lakh (100,000) fishing vessels with advanced transponder developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This nationwide rollout of the Vessel Communication and Support System (VCSS) promises to bring a new era of safety for fishermen, offering crucial weather alerts, real-time tracking, and immediate boundary warnings to prevent accidental border crossings. This isn't just about tracking; it's a lifeline. The VCSS, powered by ISRO 'Nabhmitra' application, enables two-way communication, meaning fishermen can send SOS messages during emergencies like accidents or sudden illness, and authorities can respond swiftly. The system will also help fishermen find richer fishing grounds, like hilsa shoals, and avoid dangerous areas, significantly boosting their efficiency and reducing risks. Beyond safety at sea, this initiative also strengthens India's national security by better monitoring marine movements and curbing illegal activities in coastal waters. The project, operating under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), will see transponder provided free of cost to eligible fishermen, with funding split 60:40 between the central government and states. With installation already underway in several coastal states and over 49,000 transponder already fitted, the full rollout is expected to transform the lives of countless fishing communities and secure India's vast coastline. New Space India Limited (NSIL) will handle maintenance for the initial two years, ensuring smooth operations for this crucial upgrade.
