Despite a recent surge that saw retail sugar prices jump by nearly 30% in just a month, India's leading sugar industry body, ISMA, confidently declared there's no shortage of the sweetener, promising relief for consumers with prices set to decline soon. This assurance comes as average retail prices hit around Rs 64 per kilogram this week, a sharp rise from Rs 48 a month ago, fueling widespread concern as the festive season approaches. The association attributes the spike to aggressive speculative buying and panic stocking rather than any actual scarcity. The price hike has been a result of multiple factors, including lower-than-expected domestic production forecasts for the 2025-26 Sugar Season, which were impacted by adverse weather conditions like excess rainfall, waterlogging, and crop diseases such as Red Rot. In response, the government has stepped in decisively, permitting duty-free imports of 10 Lakh Tonnes of raw sugar and imposing strict stockholding limits on traders and bulk consumers to curb hoarding. These measures aim to stabilize market sentiment and ensure adequate supply, particularly crucial given tightening global sugar availability due to an estimated global deficit for 2026-27 and the looming effects of El Niño on major producing countries. Looking ahead, ISMA anticipates that prices will normalize within the next 7-10 days, bolstered by the government's interventions and the early start of the Sugarcane Crushing Season from October 15. This accelerated crushing, especially in key states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, is expected to inject an additional 10 Lakh Tonnes of fresh sugar into the market during October alone, significantly easing supply pressure. Consumers should keep an eye on these developments as the festival rush begins, hoping for a sweeter deal on their daily essentials.
