India's white-collar job market saw a significant surge in August, with hiring growing by 14% year-on-year, primarily fueled by robust demand in the auto, healthcare, and retail sector. This upward trend is further boosted by a remarkable 31% jump in demand for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning roles, signaling a deep transformation in talent needs across industries. The latest Naukri JobSpeak report indicates that while the auto sector led with a 19% growth, followed by healthcare at 16% and retail at 15%, the overall positive sentiment extends across all experience levels, from freshers to senior professionals. However, Info Edge (India) Ltd MD and CEO Hitesh Oberoi cautions that this growth needs to be viewed in light of the shifting festive calendar, which saw a larger part of the festive period in August last year compared to September this year, suggesting that the true underlying hiring momentum will become clearer in the upcoming festive quarter. Hyderabad and Kolkata emerged as top-performing metros in hiring, while emerging cities like Bhubaneswar and Raipur also saw substantial activity. Looking ahead, India's white-collar employment market is expected to maintain its positive trajectory through the second half of 2026, with a Naukri survey revealing that 79% of HR leaders anticipate new job creation. While AI is seen as a creator of opportunities rather than a destroyer of jobs, a persistent skills gap remains a key challenge, with many employers struggling to find candidates with the necessary expertise. This highlights an urgent need for upskilling and reskilling initiatives to align talent with the evolving demands of a rapidly digitizing economy.
