Indonesia Bolsters Air Power with 12 Leonardo M-346F Block 20 Jets

Indonesia is significantly upgrading its air defense capabilities with the acquisition of 12 Leonardo M-346 F Block 20 multirole light fighter aircraft. The contract, valued at close to 1 billion euros, was officially sealed on July 21, 2026, at the Farnborough International Airshow between Italian aerospace giant Leonardo and local brokerage PT E-System Solutions (ESS) Indonesia. Deliveries are slated to begin in 2030, marking a crucial step in Jakarta's ongoing military modernization. This deal, which follows a Letter of Intent signed in February, positions Indonesia as the 23rd global operator of the M-346 series and the first in Asia to receive the advanced Block 20 variant. The M-346 F Block 20 is a powerful hybrid, capable of both advanced pilot training and light combat missions, equipped with features like an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, Link 16 datalink, and an integrated advanced flight training system. This acquisition is particularly notable as Indonesia is also diversifying its defense suppliers, having recently inducted French Dassault Rafale jets and exploring options with Korean and Turkish aircraft, aiming to replace its aging BAE Systems Hawk fleet and enhance its strategic readiness across its vast archipelagic territory. Beyond the aircraft, the contract also emphasizes the localization of support, maintenance, repair, overhaul (MRO), and training capabilities, alongside human capital development, underscoring a commitment to bolstering Indonesia's domestic aerospace industry. Furthermore, Leonardo and ESS Indonesia have also inked a separate Letter of Intent for the potential supply of AW149 naval helicopters, signaling a broader strategic partnership. The rollout of these new jets by 2030 will be a key indicator of Indonesia's progress in developing a modern, integrated air force capable of addressing evolving regional security challenges.
