Indonesia is making a big push to end all deaths from dengue by the year 2030, a major goal for a country that faces one of the world's heaviest burdens from this mosquito-borne disease. This ambitious target, outlined in a new national plan, comes as Indonesia battles a high number of cases and explores groundbreaking solutions, including a new mRNA vaccine prototype and widespread use of special Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes. This effort marks a new chapter in Indonesia's 58-year fight against dengue, aiming to protect its people from this often deadly illness. The country's strategy, updated for 2026-2029, focuses on early detection, better treatment, strong prevention, and quick responses to outbreaks. A key part of this is the Wolbachia method, which has shown great success in places like Yogyakarta, reducing dengue cases by 77% and hospital stays by 86%. This method, where mosquitoes carrying the Wolbachia bacteria are released to stop dengue transmission, is now being rolled out in five more cities and planned for 20 others. Adding to this, Indonesia recently launched a prototype of the world's first mRNA-based tetravalent dengue vaccine, developed with China, which could be a game-changer in fighting the virus. Despite these exciting steps, challenges remain. Indonesia reported about 161,000 dengue infections and over 600 deaths in 2025 alone, with nearly 40,000 cases and 105 deaths already in 2026. Climate change, especially events like El Niño, can make outbreaks worse, making the need for advanced early warning systems and strong community involvement even more urgent. Indonesia's success will depend on how well it brings together these new technologies, public health programs like the '3M Plus Program,' and global partnerships to truly achieve 'Freedom from Dengue' for its citizens.
