INS Mahendragiri Joins Indian Navy, Bolstering Self-Reliance and Naval Power

The Indian Navy today welcomed its newest and most advanced warship, INS Mahendragiri, into service in Visakhapatnam. This stealth frigate, the sixth of the Project 17A series, marks a significant leap for India's self-reliance in defence and is poised to boost the nation's maritime capabilities, especially in the strategically vital Indo-Pacific Region. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who presided over the commissioning, highlighted the warship's 75% indigenous content as a proud symbol of a 'self-confident India'. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and designed by the Indian Navy Warship Design Bureau (WDB), INS Mahendragiri is equipped with cutting-edge stealth technology, a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, and an arsenal featuring BrahMos and Barak-8 missile systems. Its induction into the Eastern Fleet reinforces the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision, aiming to transform India from a major importer of military hardware to a global hub for sophisticated warship manufacturing. As INS Mahendragiri prepares for operational deployment, it will undertake multi-mission roles including anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare, enhancing India's maritime security and power projection across the Indian Ocean Region. With INS Vindhyagiri, the seventh and final Project 17A frigate, still under construction, today's commissioning underscores India's accelerating pace in indigenous warship building and its commitment to fostering a robust domestic defence industrial ecosystem.
