The Indian Navy officially commissioned INS Nipun, its second indigenous Diving Support Vessel (DSV) of the Nistar-class, on August 31, 2026, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, marking a significant leap in the nation's deep-sea diving and submarine rescue capabilities. This new, purpose-built vessel dramatically enhances India's ability to conduct complex underwater operations and respond swiftly to submarine emergencies, closing a critical eight-year capability gap. Designed and constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam, INS Nipun is a testament to India's burgeoning self-reliance in defense shipbuilding, boasting nearly 75-80% indigenous content. With INS Nipun now stationed on the West Coast under the Western Naval Command, alongside its sister ship INS Nistar on the East Coast, the Indian Navy now possesses dedicated deep-sea diving and submarine rescue platforms across both its seaboards. This strategic deployment allows for rapid mobilization of Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) and specialized diving equipment, crucial for evacuating personnel from distressed submarines. The vessel's advanced features, including saturation diving capabilities up to 300 meters and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), solidify India's position among an elite group of nations with comprehensive underwater intervention and salvage capabilities. The commissioning strengthens India's role as a 'Preferred Submarine Rescue Partner' in the Indo-Pacific region, ready to assist not only its own submarines but also those of friendly nations. As maritime security challenges evolve, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff, underscored the importance of such robust capabilities to sustain multi-domain operations and maintain combat readiness. This indigenous milestone further propels India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, showcasing its growing industrial prowess and strategic autonomy in a contested global maritime environment.
