J&K Boosts Local Economy: Two Unity Malls Approved at ₹255 Crore

In a significant move to empower its local economy and artisans, the Jammu and Kashmir government has greenlit the construction of two 'Unity Malls' in Srinagar and Jammu, a project valued at ₹255 crore. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced the initiative on Wednesday, emphasizing its role in creating dedicated platforms for regional handicrafts, handlooms, and indigenous products. This development aims to bolster market access for local producers and is a key step in the Union Territory's broader economic development strategy. The Unity Malls are part of a wider Central Government scheme, first unveiled in the Union Budget 2023-24, designed to establish such facilities in every Indian state to promote the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) and GI-tagged goods initiatives. With ₹130 crore earmarked for the Srinagar mall, slated for the Kashmir Haat area, and ₹125 crore for the Jammu facility, these projects will operate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This approach ensures government ownership while leveraging private sector efficiency for operation and maintenance, aiming to boost tourism, trade, and employment across the region. The approval comes as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's National Conference government continues its strong push for the restoration of J&K's statehood, a central political demand following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The Unity Malls are expected to be completed within 18 months, with the Srinagar project focused on redeveloping and expanding Kashmir Haat into a state-of-the-art facility showcasing products from across India and J&K's 20 districts. This blend of economic upliftment and political advocacy sets the stage for significant changes in the Union Territory.
