Jajpur Drowns Again: Kani River Breach Worsens Odisha's Seventh Flood Spell

The situation in Odisha Jajpur district has taken a severe turn as the Baitarani River continues to flow above its danger mark, triggering a fresh and significant breach in the Kani River embankment. Floodwaters are now surging into homes and submerging roads under at least two feet of water, leaving more than 67,000 people across 42 villages in Dasarathpur and Binjharpur block in desperate need of assistance. This latest disaster marks the seventh flood spell for parts of Odisha this monsoon season, painting a grim picture for affected communities. This recurring crisis is largely fueled by incessant rainfall, recently intensified by Cyclone Arnab, which has pushed river levels to critical highs. The Kani River embankment suffered a substantial 70-foot breach at Patana, alarmingly at the very spot where a similar breach occurred in July and was reportedly 'repaired' just weeks ago. Locals are pointing fingers at the alleged poor quality of these previous repairs, intensifying the frustration among residents who have been battling repeated inundations since July. In response, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is set to conduct an aerial survey of the devastated regions to assess the damage firsthand. Meanwhile, teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Fire Services are relentlessly working to evacuate marooned residents and distribute essential dry rations and cooked food to those sheltering on embankments and in temporary relief camps. The immediate focus remains on rescue and ensuring basic necessities, but the long-term challenge of rebuilding lives and infrastructure, especially addressing the persistent issue of river embankment integrity, looms large.
