In a historic first, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) has successfully auctioned two major limestone blocks under the Central Government transparent Mineral Auction Process, marking a significant shift towards organised mineral development in the Union Territory. This pivotal move, announced on October 2, 2026, signals a new era for J&K economy, promising to unlock its vast geological potential and attract crucial investment into the region. The successful auction of the Koot-Kapran and Wantrag Limestone Block, both located in Anantnag district, represents the initial phase of systematic exploration and commercial development. These blocks, with estimated reserves of 4.75 million tonnes and 10.853 million tonnes respectively, had undergone G-4 and G-3 stage exploration, providing a solid geological basis for mining. This development is part of a broader push for infrastructure and economic growth in J&K since the Abrogation of Article 370, moving away from ad hoc exploitation towards a structured, competitive, and sustainable mining model. The Ministry of Mines, which conducted the auction on behalf of the J&K administration, expects these projects to catalyse new investment and generate substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities, fostering local participation in the emerging mining ecosystem. As development proceeds, attention will also be on ensuring sustainable extraction and how schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana (PMKKKY) through District Mineral Foundations (DMFs) will benefit mining-affected areas. This initial success sets the stage for future mineral auctions, potentially transforming J&K into a key player in India mineral resource sector.
