Karnataka Embraces AI: Digital Revolution for Student Exams and Teacher Relief

Karnataka is rolling out a game-changer in its education system, planning to introduce AI-based answer sheet evaluation for students from Classes 8 to 12, starting next academic year. This major digital shift, developed in partnership with IIT Dharwad, aims to lighten the heavy load on teachers while boosting evaluation accuracy and speed across the state. Beyond just grading, the plan also includes leveraging AI for preparing question papers, marking a significant step towards modernizing the entire examination process. This move is part of a broader, ambitious digital transformation within Karnataka's education sector. The state has already begun piloting digital answer sheet scanning through the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) and has implemented an AI-powered facial recognition attendance system, known as the 'Nirantara' programme, across government and aided schools since the 2025-26 academic year. Furthermore, the government's 2026-27 budget unveiled plans for 50 new AI Learning Laboratories in colleges and an AI-driven Personalized Digital Tutor for over a million students, all aligning with the national IndiaAI Mission to integrate cutting-edge technology into learning. While AI will play a central role, teachers will maintain the final say in awarding marks, ensuring human oversight and fairness in the assessment process. This hybrid approach signals a future where technology supports educators, freeing them to focus more on classroom teaching and student development rather than administrative tasks.
