Karnataka Halts Pfizer Sales Amid Massive Fake Drug Probe, Trust Crisis Looms

Karnataka's health authorities have taken drastic action, suspending the wholesale license of Pfizer C&F depot in Nelamangala and halting all sales of its products in the state. This bold move comes after Pfizer allegedly failed to cooperate with local investigators probing a massive, dangerous counterfeit drug racket that was found using the global pharma giant's labels. The crackdown has also seen 16 other drug licenses cancelled and eight suspended across Karnataka, signalling a serious effort to clean up the state's pharmaceutical supply chain. The investigation kicked off with an August 18, 2026, raid on a farmhouse in Bidadi, Bengaluru, where officials unearthed an illegal operation repackaging low-cost medicines from states like Telangana and Himachal Pradesh as expensive, imported brands, including Pfizer. Spurious drugs, machinery, and printing materials worth over Rs 5 crore were seized, raising urgent alarms about public safety as these fake products, some meant for critical care, could contain harmful or inactive ingredients. This local incident highlights a broader national crisis, with a Public Interest Litigation recently filed in the Supreme Court demanding a comprehensive framework to tackle India's persistent counterfeit medicine problem. As a Special Investigation Team (SIT) digs deeper, consumers are being urged to buy medicines only from licensed pharmacies and demand valid invoices. Authorities have blocked batch numbers of seized drugs on the Karnataka FDA portal to prevent further distribution, while samples are undergoing laboratory testing. With the suspected kingpin reportedly in Azerbaijan and a call for an interstate probe, this situation is far from over. The pharma industry, already facing stricter rules from the Union Health Ministry on data submission, is now under intense scrutiny, and patient trust hangs in the balance.
