Karnataka has officially rolled out a groundbreaking initiative, incorporating advanced fertility treatments like In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) under its Ayushman Bharat-Chief Minister's Arogya Karnataka (AB-PMJAY-CM's ArK) scheme. This means eligible families holding Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Priority Household (PHH) card can now access up to three cycles of IVF and related procedures free of cost, a significant relief for couples struggling with infertility. The program is currently operating as a one-year pilot project, initially targeting 120 beneficiaries. This move by the Karnataka government stands out, especially since the broader national Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme typically does not cover fertility treatments, highlighting the state's unique commitment to addressing a pressing social and emotional burden. The prohibitive cost of IVF in private hospitals, often running into lakhs of rupees, has historically put it out of reach for many. Health Minister U.T. Khader has been instrumental in pushing this initiative, emphasizing the need to reduce financial strain. The state also allocated 620 crore rupees in its 2026-27 budget for healthcare infrastructure, including new IVF centers in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi, building on facilities like the one already operational in Hubballi under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. As the pilot project progresses, an expert committee is set to finalize guidelines for eligibility and facility empanelment, with a long-term vision to expand services, potentially restricting them to government hospitals if infrastructure allows after the initial year. The success of this pilot will be keenly watched, as it could pave the way for broader access to reproductive healthcare and offer hope to thousands more families across Karnataka aspiring to parenthood. The fixed package rates, set by the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) expert committee, provide a clear framework for treatment costs under the scheme.
