Kashmir's cherished Himalayan Snow Trout, locally known as Khont, has received a crucial boost as scientists at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) successfully bred the vulnerable native fish in captivity. This breakthrough, which standardized breeding and larval-rearing methods, offers a much-needed lifeline amidst increasing threats like pollution and climate change that have severely impacted the region's aquatic life. The success comes at a critical time, as Kashmir has seen a disturbing rise in fish mortality incidents, especially affecting native Schizothorax species, in recent months across vital springs like Panzath, Martand, and Verinag. These widespread deaths are primarily linked to severe pollution from domestic sewage and waste, which has drastically degraded water quality and weakened fish immunity. Compounding the problem, aggressive common carp, or 'Punjabi fish', are outcompeting the slow-growing snow trout, further pushing the indigenous species towards decline. With around 10,000 eggs already produced, the next crucial step involves rearing these young fish to a strong stage before carefully releasing them into natural streams across the Valley. Experts hope this 'ranching' effort will help replenish wild populations, but its long-term success hinges on urgent restoration and protection of the fragile freshwater habitats where the snow trout naturally thrives. The Jammu and Kashmir Department of Fisheries is expected to adopt these new breeding methods to support wider conservation efforts.
