Kremlin Seizes Nestle and Auchan's Russian Assets in Escalating Economic War

Russian President Vladimir Putin has dramatically escalated Moscow's economic war against 'unfriendly' Western nations, seizing the Russian assets of global food giant Nestle, French retailer Auchan, and other European firms. This latest move, enacted through a presidential decree, places these significant foreign businesses under 'temporary state administration' by a little-known Russian entity, marking Russia's largest such corporate takeover since at least 2024. The Kremlin justified its actions as direct retaliation for the 'hostile actions' of countries supporting Ukraine, explicitly linking the seizures to European military aid. This follows a pattern established by a 2023 decree, which allowed Moscow to place assets from nations it deems 'unfriendly' under state control, a mechanism previously used against major players like French dairy producer Danone and Danish brewer Carlsberg. Despite warnings, Nestle and Auchan, which operates 230 stores and employs 30,000 people in Russia, had largely maintained their presence, with Nestle citing its role in supplying essential food products. The assets are now managed by AO L.E.V. Management, a shell company registered in 2024 with minimal public profile. Nestle has stated it is 'assessing the situation and its options' to protect its rights and ensure business continuity for its 7,000 employees.
