In a massive vote of confidence for India's booming digital economy, Canadian pension fund La Caisse has acquired a significant 24% stake in Altius Telecom Infrastructure Trust for approximately Rs 12,100 crore (CAD 1.76 billion). This major investment, finalized on September 2, 2026, positions the global investor alongside Brookfield as a key stakeholder in India's largest independent telecom tower platform, which operates over 258,000 sites nationwide. The deal comes as India, the world's second-largest telecommunications market, experiences an explosion in mobile data consumption and an aggressive rollout of 5G services, making robust digital infrastructure more critical than ever. Altius, which rebranded in 2024 following a Brookfield-led consortium's acquisition of American Tower Corporation's (ATC) India operations, is at the forefront of this growth, providing the backbone for 4G and 5G connectivity across the country. Brookfield remains Altius' largest investor, joined by other institutional heavyweights like Singapore's GIC and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI). This capital injection arrives strategically ahead of Altius' anticipated Initial Public Offering (IPO), where the company plans to transition into a publicly listed Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) and raise an additional Rs 6,000 crore. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) swiftly approved the transaction via its green channel, signaling regulatory support for foreign investment in vital sectors. The move not only bolsters Altius' financial strength to meet India's escalating demand for connectivity but also underscores the broader trend of global pension funds aggressively targeting India's burgeoning digital infrastructure market.
