Lava, one of India's homegrown phone manufacturers, has just launched a game-changer: PhonePe UPI payment service is now available on its feature phone, completely ditching the need for an internet connection. This groundbreaking move, powered by NPCI UPI 123PAY technology, means millions of feature phone users across India, especially in rural areas, can now access digital payments, bridging a significant gap in financial inclusion. This isn't just a minor update; PhonePe is the first major Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP) to bring full UPI capabilities to India's estimated 200 million-plus feature phone users, a market often overlooked by smartphone-centric solutions. The service, already pre-installed on new Lava A7 Torch (2026) and A2 Smart models, uses a robust SMS-based architecture, ensuring transactions go through even with limited 2G connectivity. It allows for peer-to-peer and peer-to-merchant payments, QR code scanning on camera-enabled phones, and even balance checks, with future plans for bill payments and Aadhaar-based onboarding. This is a crucial step for PhonePe, which aims to onboard 'the next 300 million users' into the digital payments ecosystem, aligning with NPCI ambitious target of 20 billion transactions by 2027. Looking ahead, this integration is poised to significantly accelerate digital adoption in semi-urban and rural demographics, empowering small merchants and individuals who previously relied solely on cash. As PhonePe expands this service to more handset makers, the ripple effect on India's digital economy could be massive, democratizing access to financial services. The company has also rolled out an AI-powered voice helpline in 13 languages to guide first-time users, showcasing a deep commitment to user experience and wider accessibility. Watch for upcoming updates that will further enhance functionality, pushing the boundaries of what feature phone can achieve in the digital payments space.
