LG asks DDA to complete drain desilting by June 15

Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has issued a sharp directive to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), demanding the completion of stormwater drain desilting by the critical June 15 deadline to avert perennial monsoon waterlogging. The DDA reports approximately 70% of the work, covering 69km in Narela and 192km in Dwarka, is already finished, but the LG is pressing for absolute readiness ahead of the anticipated late-June monsoon onset. The urgency underscores Delhi's annual battle with urban flooding, which cripples traffic, poses health risks, and strains public infrastructure. This proactive push from LG Sandhu, who has been personally monitoring operations, aims to prevent a repeat of past monsoon chaos, highlighting the fragmented responsibilities across agencies like the DDA, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department. While the DDA races against its deadline, the MCD has already claimed nearly 80% completion of its initial desilting phase for larger drains, signaling a city-wide, albeit multi-pronged, effort. With the monsoon expected to hit the National Capital Territory of Delhi between June 25 and June 30, the next five days will be crucial in determining whether the city can mitigate significant disruptions. Residents in Narela and Dwarka, particularly in 11 identified waterlogging-prone locations, will be watching closely as the DDA finalizes its operations. The success or failure to meet the June 15 mandate will not only define the immediate monsoon experience but also set a precedent for inter-agency accountability in Delhi's vital urban management.
