Luxury giant LVMH is joining forces with the prestigious Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) to launch a pioneering research chair focused on blending science, artificial intelligence, and creativity in fashion design. Announced on July 13, 2026, this 'Science and Creativity' chair, backed by 150,000 euros in annual funding, aims to deeply explore how new technologies can enrich the creative process without sidelining the unique touch of designers. This move comes as AI rapidly transforms the luxury sector, with industry estimates projecting AI adoption could generate $50–75 billion in additional value by 2028, largely by speeding up design, reducing sample waste, and boosting personalization. LVMH itself has already committed over $200 million to AI initiatives through its LVMH Luxury Technology Fund, leveraging AI for everything from supply chain authentication via its Aura blockchain to customer relations and product development. This partnership underscores a crucial industry debate: how AI can act as a powerful 'creative accelerator' for designers, expanding possibilities and helping create virtual prototypes, rather than replacing human artistry and intuition. The research chair will dive into three main areas: cognitive science applied to creation, AI-assisted design models, and the anthropology of design, studying the cultural and social aspects of creativity. Notably, philosopher and researcher Tobias Rees, founder of Limn, will be a key partner, bringing a focus on the interactions between technological innovation and humanities. With nearly half of IFM's design students already using generative AI solutions, this initiative is poised to shape the future of luxury fashion professions, reinforcing that human emotion and culture remain central to luxury while technology acts as an intelligent, supportive partner.
