Indian agencies have scored a major win against transnational organized crime, successfully extraditing Mahadev Online Book App alleged mastermind, Sourabh Chandrakar, from Oman this past Sunday. The focus now immediately shifts to Dubai, where authorities are aggressively pushing for the return of co-founder Ravi Uppal, who remains a key target in the sprawling multi-crore online betting and money laundering scandal. Chandrakar, a former juice seller from Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, will face a special CBI court in Raipur today, marking a critical step in dismantling one of India's largest illegal betting networks. The Mahadev Online Book App operated a vast franchise-based network from the UAE, engaging users in illegal betting on everything from cricket to card games, with proceeds allegedly laundered through a complex web of mule bank accounts and hawala channels. While the CBI primarily cites a Rs 6,000-crore racket, the Enforcement Directorate broader investigation into the syndicate, including associated apps like Skyexchange.com and Lotus365.com, estimates total 'proceeds of crime' to be a staggering Rs 94,000 crore. The probe has also unearthed disturbing allegations of payments to public servants and politicians in Chhattisgarh, though former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has vehemently denied any involvement. Uppal, against whom an Interpol Red Corner Notice was issued in October 2023, was reportedly detained in Dubai in December last year but later released, only to be believed to have returned to the emirate, setting the stage for renewed extradition efforts. With Chandrakar now in custody, investigators anticipate significant breakthroughs in unravelling the full scope of the syndicate's operations and identifying all beneficiaries. The intense pressure on UAE authorities to extradite Uppal suggests a concerted effort to bring both alleged kingpins to justice, which could expose deeper layers of this financial fraud and its alleged connections. As legal proceedings unfold in Raipur, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the fate of Uppal and potentially revealing the extent of political patronage that allowed this illicit empire to flourish.
